Healthy Food Swaps For Your Superbowl Sunday

Superbowl parties usually come packed full of cheesy dips, pizza, wings, hotdogs - things that don't qualify for the clean eating or healthy category.  Try to go for a run the next day after you just ate these foods.......  The problem with these foods (although they do taste delicious) is not only that they aren't good for us, but we usually eat A TON of them.  I doubt anyone is bringing their portion control 21 day fix containers to their superbowl party.  So pick a food or two to splurge on and just have a little bit, then make over your other food options with these tips.

1.  Bake your wings instead of frying them.

If anyone watches Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity cook off, you know that baked wings can get crispy.  Florence Henderson got rave reviews for her chicken wings last week, and she baked them!  A lot of calories and bad fat saved this way.  Just think, you can eat more of them now!  And you can make some really flavorful sauces to go with them to keep it interesting.  You could also cut up chicken breasts and make your own breading and bake chicken nuggets (even healthier - no skin involved!).

2.  Make your superbowl chili with more beans and veggies.

If you use meat in your chili, choose lean, grass fed beef or lean ground turkey.  You can also mix it up by using a few different kinds of beans, which pack a good protein and fiber punch.  Using different seasonings adds lots of flavor without the calories.  Stay away from adding a ton of toppings, like cheese, sour cream and chips.

3.  Swap out your pizza crust for a whole wheat or whole grain tortilla, or another bread such as naan or pita.

All of the extra dough in a pan or thick crust pizza adds a lot of calories, not to mention white flour is just not good for you.

4.  Add a lot of veggies to your pizza

Veggies are automatically low in calories and have a lot of nutrition!  You can fill up on this with less slices.  Try broccoli, onion, tomato, green and red pepper, olives, kale, spinach, or any other veggie that is your favorite!

5.  Trade sour cream for plain greek yogurt.

Less calories, more protein.  You can make dips with greek yogurt, and also top your chili with it!

6.  After you've made your greek yogurt dip, use veggies to dip instead of chips.

I also make a good sweet greek yogurt dip with peanut butter and a little honey.  Use different fruits to dip if you've made one like this.

7.  Try sliders instead of burgers, and swap out the beef patties for turkey or chicken.

You could even make a veggie slider.  Portion control at it's finest!
