Everybody Poops!

Get your fiber!!!!

Fiber, or roughage, is only found in plant foods such as vegetables, oats, beans and fruits.  It is the part of the plant food your body doesn’t digest and absorb, so it just keeps on going through your digestive system until it, well, comes out.

Fiber has many benefits.  It helps normalize bowel movements and maintains bowel health by lowering your risk of hemorrhoids and colon cancer.  It helps in weight management by making you feel fuller for a longer amount of time.  It may help to lower your bad cholesterol, therefore helping to prevent colon cancer, and can also help stabilize blood sugar levels by slowing the digestion and absorption of sugar into your bloodstream, therefore helping to prevent diabetes.  The Institute of Medicine says women should get between 21-25 grams of fiber per day, and men 30-38 grams.  To increase your daily intake of fiber, eat more fruits and veggies, or throw a few spinach or kale leaves into your morning smoothie.
